I feel so lost and neglected is the best way to explain it. I had a full hysterectomy at 28 and for me Crossfit seemed to work. I started at 202 pounds and got down to 138 pounds, which was a perfect weight for me. I felt good and life was good all while taking zero supplements. About a year and a half ago I started gaining weight, losing my hair, major issues with being cold, numbness in my limbs, unable to sleep at night but taking daily naps, headaches and massive weight gain. I am up 40 pounds while still exercising regularly like I used to. In February they found a tumor on my left thyroid and removed it plus my left thyroid. I’m continuing to have all the symptoms and can’t seem to find a doctor to help. They all just say I’m fine. This can not be my new normal. For 11 years everything g was great and I felt amazing. Now I hate life and myself. I feel like a walking zombie and no one seems to care.

    1. Hi Renee, I’m sorry to hear all you are going through. I have many Hypothyroid Mom readers here who are hypothyroid now since a total or partial thyroidectomy. Getting thyroid hormone replacement medication optimal is vital since the body relies on it if the thyroid gland is not able (or absent due to surgery) to produce sufficient thyroid hormone. I created a directory to help my readers locate the information they want to read about more easily because there are now hundreds of thyroid articles on the Hypothyorid Mom website. Here is the directory. I hope it is helpful to you: https://hypothyroidmom.com/thyroid-warning-signs-from-head-to-toe/

  2. Has anyone here given up on pharma’s meds and started Lugol’s Iodine? If so, have you taken any other products along with it?

I finally gave up on the meds, and seem to be doing better (certainly no worse) on the iodine!

I’m 72 years old, and have suffered through thyroid issues, numerous doctors, and meds over 40 or so years.

  5. I had a nodule removed in 1986 with radioactive iodine, weighed 130. Lbs. and today I have no thyroid left according to my endocrinologist. My primary care physician treated me with Synthroid starting in 1990 because I became hypothyroid and was rapidly aging weight, fatigued, cold, dry skin, no energy and could barely walk or lift my arms for any length of time. I weighed 150 lbs. The doctor treated me for years and just upped my Synthroid every few years as I gained more and more weight, starving myself so I wouldn’t hit 165. But it was impossible, even when not eating my weight rose every year till I went to an endocrinologist when I hit 195 lbs in 2012. He raised my Synthroid and gave me Cytomel. No improvement. Of course, all this time I am being treated for depression with antidepressant and high cholesterol with statins (not putting hypothyroid into equation because how would I know). Finally after my continued starvation and increased Synthroid (cytomel did not work, in 2014 I got my weight down to 140. Thrilled to be off statin and antidepressants. My endocrinologist dropped my Synthroid down to 100 and everything just went out of whack. Again. Gained weight continually, back up to 175 now and he finally agrees to put me up to 150 mcg of synthroid. Nothing has worked since he lowered Synthroid. I’ve been on 150 for a month now and cannot lose weight. Not taking statin, although suddenly my cholesterol is high. No duh! My body is so out of sync. I am supplementing with selenium, magnesium, zinc, ashwagandha and multiple vitamins. My energy is at all time low again. All the weight is in the middle, my cortisol is off the charts from normal range. Tried paleo diet for ten days and gained two pounds. I see my endocrinologist every two months now because I am gaining so fast. When my daughters all tell me they are testing as slightly hyperthyroid, I tell them ignore the doctors. TSH is different daily and not the only indicator. If they get rapid heart beat, sweaty palms, etc. I told them go see my endocrinologist. But otherwise, forget about what pcp is saying. I wish someone had warned me what was going to happen. I am so tired of not eating bread, sugar, and dieting. If I eat more than one meal, small dinner. I gain weight. I need amphetemines or I am not going to lose weight. How do you get doctor to prescribe them?

Hello Debra, as I read your story I so see myself. I know that for my thyroid levels I function better, but I do now wonder as well as my recent TSH leve 1.01, I have been having joint pain, hot flashes, shortness of breath and angina, palpitations at times as well. I am frustrated as my weight keeps going up, I have gained 30 lbs over last 5 years and my current thyroid medication is 150 mcg of Synthroid. I tried amphetamines as well, while taking them on average 3 hrs sleep on daily basis, no appetite was great, but I did not lose the weight as you need to make sure you are eating fruits and proteins and water, which I struggled due to not being hungry, i never lost weight as my body thought I was in starvation mode. I did love the energy as well. As of today, I’m frustrated with increased swelling, especially in my face. We struggle with Endocrinologist in our area, as we have to travel 350 miles to closes one. I am thinking of adding T3 to my T4 medication as well.

  7. With all due respect, I am stating my opinions.
Many patients and clinicians prefer to refer to NDT (Natural Desiccated Thyroid) as DTE (Desiccated Thyroid Extract). All thyroid hormone replacement is non-human. They are either natural or synthetic.

Unfortunately, prior to use of THR, clinicians do not look at their patients’ T4 and T3 levels. Some patients, like myself, prior to TT, had/have high FT4 and low FT3 levels.

Some clinicians are not permitted by the owners of their practices to test FT3 and/or script for DTE. Patients have to use non-endocrinologists to obtain their DTE. Many clinicians are not well-trained in testing Free T3 and use of DTE. This is a major concern and cause for the issues experienced by some patients that use DTE.

Users of DTE that are well-informed, and through personal experience, find that they fair better when they start out a bit lower than their synthetic T4 dose, or start out at the DTE manufacturer equivalent, will experience “hypo” symptoms. Some patients start out too high, causing their bodies to not adjust to the added T3 in the DTE. They experience “hyper” side-effects. This does not mean DTE is not going to be good for them.

Clinicians have to know what to test, when to test, how to dose. This includes testing DTE at 4 weeks after each change in dose (or brand), knowing that “in range” or “your levels are good” is not enough. Most of DTE users prefer to have the FT4 lower in range and FT3 higher in range.

  8. Thanks for all the information on thyroid medication. I started Levothyroxine about 5 years ago after my thyroidectomy. I was started on 150 mg. I did fine for a little while and then I was having a lot of emotional side effects. Getting depressed and crying all the time. I felt so silly being that I am not like that normally, which made everything worse. So after my next visit and some blood work the dosage ended up being way to high for me. My doctor lowered the dosage and then for a little while good again, until I started having a lot of headaches right in the top of my head, and it felt as though my heart was racing sometimes, and then I would feel exhausted. So she lowered my dosage again and I am now on 112mg, doing good so far. I never would have thought that the small mg difference would cause those kinds of symptoms. It is crazy how all this works.

  9. I’m on levothyroxine 75mg.i have gained weight.my doctor says it doesnt make you gain weight. But hello it as and it does.they dont care..I’ve never been this fat .my husband hates it .but I cant lose the weight..I am feeling alot better about 4 months ago I felt old ugly couldn’t get in to clothes I like .had to bye compfortable old lady cloths ..I dont understand all the tsh t3 t4.it should be on the packet..I wish they would listen to us the doctor s.cos we no how we feel cos our body’s tell us.but the doctor s which read the book.should see us regular and moniture.im sure then we might get good results.i mean we have to live with this for the rest of our lives. I am an RN who is ready to literally rip.out my hair due to frustration getting even diagnosed. Now that most of my thyroid labs have come back wnl my Internal medicine MD just insults me, ignores all my symptoms such as feeling cold all year long with the metabolic rate of a sloth! No matter what do Not give up! I feel horrible and so fat. I am going to go on Pentermine which is an appetite suppressant that has mixed side effects. So many doctors are indifferent. If they can not figure it out they either give up or get
nasty. Either is totally unacceptable! You deserve more! If you decide to change MD’s and you probably do need to, I want to warn you to be very very careful. Call your insurance and let them walk you through the process. I lost a decent MD myself just because I asked for a
second opinion. MD’s often have huge ego’s. The second MD I saw was horrible and even though I begged again and again my original MD would not see me.Try going on ask.com and write 10

  15. Question is this graph for U.S only? And also, do you know of the manufactures name of the (generic) levothyroxin that is on the graph?
Thank you for the valuable information you have-shared with us 💕

    1. I’ve been wondering same myself regarding fillers in generic levothyroxine.
I’ve noticed a difference in how I feel depending on which manufacturers brand my pharmacy dispenses.
The one I am taking now makes me feel like crap and I get very nauseated when I take it.
The last batch, I felt somewhat better but not fully myself, and no nausea.
I have Oral Allergy Syndrome and, after much thinking I’ve determined there must be some kind sensitivity going on. Trick will be to get GP to agree with me…

  16. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism this year. She immediately prescribed Synthroid. Didn’t want to take it because of side effects, including hair loss. Any other options?

  17. Buy the book Stop The Thyroid Madness . Fire your doctor and go to pharmacy to see which doctors will be open minded to changing your meds toT4 T3 or NDT or Armour.

  18. Thank you for this article.
I am curious about the following and would like a reply.
Do Armour Thyroid and Nature Throid contain thyroid hormone amounts that differ from what they claim?
“Though formulations may be marketed as “T4:T3 dosed in a 4:1 fashion”, this is not so in real life. Most NDT products actually have much more T3 than T4. ”
    Appreciate the information.

    1. This article is poorly written under the FORMULATIONS section that states normal human T4:T3 ratio is 4:1. This is the ratio in porcine NDT. The human physiological T4:T3 ratio is approximately 14:1. Also, NDT does not contain more T3 than T4. Only the ratio of T3 to T4 in NDT is higher than the human physiological ratio (4:1 vs 14:1). I hope this clears up the intent of this section and I hope the author will review this reply and make the appropriate updates to the article.

  20. Hear some generics made in China and were recalled. The red dye really affects me. This article educates us but what about the Family Physicians who have no time for this? I have some hope now. Thank you.

  21. I had prescribed Levothyroxin 50 for two years. The dictor said I had subphysical hypothyrodism. Hiwverver, i could not lose weight! My physical symptoms never chsnged till I told my OBGY doctor! I thought I had an ovulation problems with every time I had my mense. He did some lab works and raised my thyroid med to 88! Is this is normal! I got very bad palpitation and noding, shortness of breath and weakness! I decided ti use my old pills as one and half tab(75). Is this jump normal for my health! I feel that both my OBgy and my internal medicine doctors are careless! I need assisstance please!

If Endocrinologist educated themselves we wouldn’t have the epidemic we have. Yes ,I’m bitter because it doesn’t work that way. Dr are held to unrealistic guidelines & frankly not educated enough. Dr don’t seem to take time fix it, not put a bandage on the problem! It was nice of you to take the time to let us know how screwed we really are.

    1. I just found this site, I hade my tsh levels taken January 5, 2021 I don’t have my thyroid since 2006, I was on 125 mcg of levothyroxine, I was put on 150 Mgh 6.5 days a week I get my blood work done every 4 months and I received an email from my doctor saying sorry for the delay this was Sunday March 7,2021 2 months after that my thyroid meds were too high and she is lowering them back to 125 mcg! First of all I felt like I was going crazy I was not remembering things and couldn’t find words when talking to people, my heart was racing and my whole body right down to my fingers hurt and achy I felt like I was sick I had a headache for about 3 weeks straight I thought I can’t take this. So when she sent me the email I felt better but also upset that it took two months and me going through all these symptoms that alone family members thought weren’t that bad, but I was sad and miserable and too ashamed to tell anyone how awful I was feeling!!

  23. blank nancy kelly says:

AMEN to this article! I have severe problems taking any of the thyroid meds and the doc seems to think it is all in my head! I have setteled on synthroid but have to skip a day every 6 days so I don’t go psycho from the side effects. Now have heart problems that could be related to low TSH and am having surgery to stop the AFIB this is causing. I have asked about the DNA testing to see why I have trouble with these meds but have been dismissed saying “those tests are too new” I am going to find a doc to sign off on them any way – I think I have nothing to lose at this point. AM completely frustrated and hoping I live through this!
